Languages & Frameworks & Libraries

Core Web Technologies

HTML - CSS - JavaScript

Also commonly used to build websites

TypeScript

Nodejs

ASP.NET - C#

PHP

Python

Along with many more choices available

I will add details here as I work on different website projects of interest.

Tooling

Editors

  • VS Code My daily Code Editor. Super flexible with Extensions support along with so much more. I've been using it since it came out in beta and still quite often find something new.
  • github.dev - Press . whilst logged in on a GitHub repository page. More info @ jasminews.uk/extras/
  • VSCode.dev VSCode available in any browser tab
  • GitHub Codespaces A Full development environment in the browser which is backed by a remote virtual machine (VM). The power of GitHub Codespaces is also available from your local code editor as well.

One of the great things I like about Visual Studio Code is its Free and Open Sourced which means its available to all. This means that you can safely pass on knowledge for anyone to follow along with, safe in the knowledge beginners can try thing out at zero cost which might be important to bringing kids or new people into the trade or hobby. Plus learning the keyboard commands and controls is a transferable skill as many other products are a based around VS Code.

Version Control - Code Storage

  • GitHub Git based code storage plus great tooling to support software development workflows.

GitHub is available for all. The free account allows people to work or play on many features but to also start out on a journey of working with others to grow communities around projects.

Git and GitHub form major roles in most software projects plus many business process today across the globe. So having a base knowledge of Git and GitHub if you are starting out can be a great help to fit in and understand terms and phrases within companies.

Website Resources Storage

Storage of things that are not under version control along with options to add or use a CDN

Code Playgrounds

A lot more to come on this subject over time. I'm currently actively working on interactive code editing within a docs system. Another area that I'm currently working with is the display of code within a webpage and the options to version control these snippets along with updating options.

Working with images

Resizing and Optimizing images has a massive effect on a website performance

Methods

Tips

Sprouts of Wisdom Tips on Jasminews.uk

Spell check or edit a webpage

A quick way to spell check or change some text to see how it looks is to enter document.designMode = 'on' and press return within the browser console tab. This will put the page into an design and edit mode which will highlight spelling errors plus allow you to change text freely. Just refresh the page to return to normal webpage mode or type document.designMode = 'off' into the browser console.

Any changes you make to the website page are not saved, so feel free to play and explore any website. More details about Edit files in the Browser are available in this Sprouts of Wisdom Tip

Labs

I'm currently exploring some ideas for some short labs, I hope to bring them to life soon on here, or as part of Jasminews.uk.
